VIS Reports First Quarter Revenue of NT$2,577 Million and Earnings Per Share of NT$0.24
Hsinchu, Taiwan, April 28, 2006 -Vanguard International Semiconductor Corporation, a leading specialty IC foundry service provider today announced its first quarter financial results. First quarter revenue was NT$2,577 million, net income of NT$ 390 million, and earnings per share of NT$0.24.

First quarter revenue declined by approximately 20% from the previous quarter, net income and earnings per share fell by 51% respectively. On a year-over-year comparison, first quarter revenue increased 16%, net income and earnings per share dropped by 61% respectively.

Due to seasonal factors and conservative inventory level as well as changing product lines among customers, first quarter average fab utilization rate dropped from 86% in the previous quarter to 71%, relatively higher than the 64% of the same period last year. Wafer shipment in the first quarter reached 119,000 wafers, down 17% from the 144,000 wafers of last quarter, but rose 14% from 104,000 wafers of the same period last year. Average gross margin for the first quarter was 27%, showing a decrease from 45% in the last quarter, but grew 22% from the same period last year.

Our revenue for the first quarter includes 26% specialty IC foundry, 19% general foundry, and the rest are driver IC foundry service. VIS spokesperson Mr. Paul Chien said, ˇ§we have started to ship 0.18um logic wafers in the first quarter, and expect a significant increase in the second quarter. We also see a gradual rise in the large panel driver IC for LCD TV, notebook, and PC monitors. Furthermore, power management IC foundry service is another business driver that we expect to grow in the near future.ˇ¨

For the second quarter of 2006, Mr. Paul Chien commented, ˇ§along with the growth of 0.18um logic and large panel driver IC foundry business, we estimate second quarter fab utilization rate to be around 88%, and wafer shipment to rise by around 20%. And with a higher percentage of 0.50um process technology in our foundry business, the blended ASP is expected to decrease by a low single digit percentage, but the gross margin will increase to be 35% ~ 37%.ˇ¨
